Collection IN-SIDE
A private villa in Essen, in the heart of the Ruhr, designed by the JFS Dortmund firm in association with interior designer Sonja Jarzyna. This three-floor home built entirely in concrete makes lavish use of Laminam large slabs for floors, walls and furnishing elements. With their aesthetic language and capacity for personalization, the IN-SIDE, Collection and I Naturali collections create an impressive, high-impact “Laminam effect”.
Sustainability as the Keynote
The German city of Essen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, belongs to the Ruhr region and has a long tradition in steel-making. This industrial heritage, in a city strongly committed to sustainability and winner of the 2017 European Green Capital Award, is also reflected in the aesthetic of this modern villa, a private home on three floors built entirely in living concrete, designed under the direction of architect Jörg Schmidt in association with interior designer Sonja Jarzyna.

One particularly significant factor of this project is the role played by its surfaces, and specifically those by Laminam, represented in the home’s interior by its large slabs from three collections: IN-SIDE (Porfido Marrone color, Flamed finish) used for floors throughout the entrance hall area and as floors and walls in the house’s bathrooms, as well as for the bathroom countertop, the washbasin, the surface of the bathroom shelves and shower and the floor of the cellar); Collection (Nero Assoluto, base of the suspended fireplace) and I Naturali (Nero Greco, kitchen walls, coffee table, kitchen worktop, table, spark guard to protect the parquet underneath the fireplace, and the waterjet-carved house number).
This structured, widespread use of large slabs on surfaces of different kinds – from walls and floors to small pieces of furniture – generates the powerful, dramatic “Laminam effect”, in which the coverings help to define and characterize the spaces.
Let’s start with IN-SIDE, the Laminam collection inspired by the different types of stone from Italian architectural tradition, reinterpreted with the aid of a ground-breaking technological procedure which provides continuity of material throughout the slabs’ surface, body and edges. IN-SIDE can indeed be shaped, interpreted and enhanced on all sides, just like real stone. In this case, Porfido Marrone Flamed deploys its strong personality to give the interiors a solid, eye-catching aesthetic presence.
In counterpoint, the more classical yet equally powerful Nero Greco from the I Naturali collection uses the antique, aristocratic refinement of marble to bestow both prestige and immense personality. Its use on the kitchen walls creates a visually striking, very robust linking feature and generates an intriguing contrast with the pale color of the flooring.
Nero Assoluto from the Collection series, used as the base for the fireplace, stands out amongst this symphony of richly textured natural mid-shades.
This is the most extreme color in Laminam’s Collection assortment, a shade so intense that surfaces have almost no depth.
In this project, Laminam large slabs contribute not only to the beauty of the design scheme but also to the functionality and sustainability of the entire home. After all, the perfect combination of aesthetics with technical performance is one of Laminam’s distinctive features, as its surfaces are durable, resistant, extremely hygienic (repellent to mold and fungi and easy to clean) and extraordinarily practical in all settings, both indoors and outdoors.
Their ductility on even small features is exemplified by the house number, waterjet-carved on a Nero Greco slab, demonstrating these slabs’ immense versatility.
