Cagnazzi Residential Building

Cagnazzi Residential Building

Contemporary geometrical forms and Mediterranean matter

Within the urban fabric of Altamura, this apartment block designed by architect Mario Poggiani is a contemporary residential building designed in a simple yet bold language that dialogues effectively with the town’s bright sunlight and Mediterranean character.

Its architecture is rooted in the combination of pure forms and tactile surfaces and creates a compositional system with a rhythmic alternation of solids and voids, generating depth and a kinship with the urban surroundings.

Facade as architectural feature

The building is structured as an orderly sequence of recessed loggias and projecting forms, which generate sharp shadows and perceptive changes across the entire block. The balconies thus become midway spaces between indoors and outdoors, which both enhance residential quality and help to define the overall architectural image.

The alternation of light-coloured surfaces and tactile features creates a dynamic yet controlled composition that changes its expression during the day through a continuous dialogue with the natural light.

Calce Terracotta: the facade’s material and its identity

The material chosen for the facade cladding was the Laminam Calce collection in Terracotta colour, inspired by architectural plasters. This collection introduces a soft, natural texture that gives the building chromatic depth without detracting from its immaculate forms.

Since the slabs used are so large (1000×3000 mm), the joints are barely visible and facade appears to be continuous, increasing the geometrical clarity of the building as a whole.

Apart from their immense expressive power, the Laminam surfaces installed on the facade fulfil the typical performance demands of contemporary architecture in terms of resistance to atmospheric agents, thermal shock and sunlight. In fact, the material’s low porosity ensures the fastness of its colours, protection from damp and urban pollutants, and minimal maintenance over time.

As a consequence, the facade becomes a durable, reliable architectural skin, combining aesthetic quality and technical performance in the Mediterranean climate.

Mediterranean material and urban continuity

The surfaces absorb the southern Italian light and transform it into shifting colours that vary throughout the day, passing from brighter shades around midday to deeper hues at dusk. Thanks to this capability, the chosen material enables the building to fit perfectly into its urban context, neither camouflaged nor over-prominent.
