Guide to choosing kitchen countertops

July 2021

Change the way you experience one of the busiest spaces in the home: from surfaces for cooking to multifunctional worktops, kitchen countertops must guarantee superior qualities and performance, like those of Laminam’s ceramic finishes.

Changes linked to lifestyle and the use of spaces in the home also involve kitchen countertops, surfaces which nowadays must by necessity be multifunctional and capable of adapting their technical characteristics to withstand new challenges.

Whether using them to chop ingredients for recipes and set down a boiling pan, or as a worktop for the parents’ computer when working from home or for the children’s afternoon snack, Laminam ceramic countertops meet the needs of the contemporary kitchen while offering superior performance compared to those in other materials, such as quartz, laminate, wood, solid surface, natural stone, steel. Specifically, they inhibit the presence of bacteria, mould and mildew, are resistant to scratches and abrasions, changes in temperature, and chemical attacks, are stain resistant, do not absorb moisture, and withstand UV rays.

Guaranteed hygiene

One of the key features to be considered when dealing with surfaces for everyday use which also come into contact with food, is the capacity to inhibit the presence of bacteria and ensure outstanding levels of hygiene compared to materials such as laminate, wood and natural stone.

As well as the intrinsic hygienic qualities of ceramic surfaces and large sizes, which reduce or even eliminate the presence of joints, Laminam slabs boast numerous national and international certifications, such as the NSF, which guarantees suitability for contact with food according to the strict protocol established by the American National Standard for Food Equipment, or the MOCA declaration of compliance, which guarantees that the mandatory requirements for food hygiene are met.

Scratch and abrasion resistance

Cooking means experimenting, and nothing makes you feel more like a chef than doing so directly on the kitchen countertop. An experience which Laminam ceramic slabs allow without restraint, thanks to their resistance to cuts and abrasions. Their characteristics remain unchanged even after intensive use and frequent cleaning.

The same cannot be said about surfaces made with other materials, which are much more likely to bear the marks of your culinary experiments.

Resistance to thermal shock

From boiling temperatures straight to freezing: kitchen countertops in solid surface, laminate, wood or quartz suffer thermal shock, showing the effects on their surface.

A Laminam ceramic slab, however, is resistant, despite its slim thickness. It is its very identity that makes the difference: ceramic has the technical capability to withstand contact with both extremely high and extremely low temperatures.

Resistance to stains and chemical agents

Stains on kitchen countertop are everyone’s nightmare. When preparing meals, we might accidentally spill oily or acidic liquids, such as oils for dressing or frying, lemon juice, or spices such as saffron or curry, which can alter the countertop’s appearance, leaving fairly visible marks.

This is not an issue that occurs with Laminam ceramic slabs, as they are anti-absorbent: they have a remarkably low level of porosity, especially when compared with other materials.

What’s more, Laminam finishes can be easily cleaned with common household cleaners as they are highly resistant to chemical agents, and as such do not require any special products. The same cannot be said of countertops made of materials other than ceramic: their user manuals include lists of detergents suitable for cleaning, which generally must be neutral, delicate, or specific products for the type of material.

Resistant to moisture and UV rays

Another strength of Laminam ceramic surfaces, especially in terms of the new functionalities required of kitchen countertops, is their capacity for withstanding moisture. Again, their reduced porosity means they do not absorb water as happens with wood or natural stone.

This characteristic of not absorbing liquids means the countertops offered by Laminam are suitable even for open-air kitchens, whether on a terrace or in the garden.

And there is no risk of potential alterations due to the effects of mother nature, either. Unlike countertops made with most other materials on the market, Laminam ceramic surfaces do not change colour or texture even in the strong summer sun, as they are resistant to UV rays.
